X Men Days of Future Past download

 

In the future, robots known as Sentinels are exterminating all mutants, as well as humans who seek to help them. A band of mutants evades the Sentinels with the help of Kitty Pryde, who has the ability to project a person's consciousness into the past. Pryde's group convenes with Storm, Wolverine, Professor Xavier, and Magneto at a monastery in China. Pryde sends Wolverine's consciousness to 1973 to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinels. Following the assassination, Mystique was captured, and her DNA was used by Trask's company to create Sentinels, whose ability to adapt to any mutant power makes them almost invincible. Xavier and Magneto advise Wolverine to find both of their younger selves for help.

Wolverine awakens in 1973. At the X-Mansion, he encounters Xavier and Beast. Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters has closed after most of the teachers and students were drafted for the Vietnam War. Xavier, now a broken man, has been overusing a serum which allows him to walk but suppresses his telepathy. Wolverine explains his mission and persuades Xavier to help free Magneto from a prison cell beneath the Pentagon, where he is being held for allegedly assassinating President John F. Kennedy. They rescue Magneto with the help of Peter Maximoff, a mutant with superhuman speed.

In Washington D.C., Trask unsuccessfully lobbies Congress to gain support for his Sentinel program. Meanwhile, in Saigon, Mystique prevents William Stryker from appropriating a group of mutant G.I.s for Trask's research. Mystique investigates Trask's office and discovers he has been capturing mutants to use in experiments. Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and Wolverine fly to Paris to intercept Mystique. In Paris, Mystique impersonates a North Vietnamese general to infiltrate the Paris Peace Accords with Trask, who is trying to sell his Sentinel technology to communist nations. Xavier, Magneto, Beast, and Wolverine arrive as Mystique is about to kill Trask. Magneto tries to kill Mystique to ensure her DNA cannot be used for the Sentinels, but she jumps from a window. The fight spills onto the street in view of the public, allowing Magneto and Mystique to escape. During this time in the future, Pryde's control over Logan weakens, and he injures Pryde.

Trask is saved, but the world is horrified by the existence of mutants. President Richard Nixon approves Trask's Sentinel program and arranges an unveiling ceremony. Trask's scientists recover Mystique's blood from the street. Meanwhile, Magneto—who has recovered his telepathy-blocking helmet—intercepts the prototype Sentinels in transit and laces their polymer-based frames with steel, allowing him to control them. At the mansion, Xavier stops taking his serum and slowly regains his mental powers, while losing the ability to walk. Through Wolverine, Xavier speaks to his future self and is inspired to work for peace between humans and mutants once again. He uses Cerebro to track Mystique, who is heading to Washington D.C.

As Xavier, Wolverine, and Beast search for Mystique, Nixon unveils the Sentinel prototypes at the White House. Magneto commandeers the Sentinels and attacks the crowd, then sets the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium around the White House as a barricade. Nixon and Trask, accompanied by the Cabinet, Secret Service officers, and Mystique (disguised as a Secret Service member), are taken to a safe room. Wolverine and Beast try to stop Magneto, but he pits a Sentinel against them and then throws Wolverine into the Potomac River. In the future, the X-Men make their final stand as a large army of Sentinels attack the monastery. In 1973, Magneto pulls the safe room from the White House and prepares to kill Nixon and his Cabinet. Mystique, disguised as Nixon, incapacitates Magneto with a plastic gun. Xavier persuades Mystique to spare Trask and allows her and Magneto to flee. Mystique's actions are seen as a mutant saving the President, leading to the cancellation of the Sentinel program. Trask is arrested for trying to sell American military secrets.

Wolverine wakes up in the future to find Iceman, Rogue, Colossus, Pryde, Beast, Storm, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Xavier alive. In 1973, Mystique impersonates Stryker and takes custody of Wolverine.

In a post-credits scene, a crowd chants to En Sabah Nur, who is using telekinesis to build pyramids as four horsemen keep watch nearby.

Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) is the leader of a band of mercenaries comprising the spear-wielding prophet Amphiaraus (Ian McShane) of Argos, the knife-throwing thief Autolycus (Rufus Sewell) of Sparta, the feral warrior Tydeus (Aksel Hennie) of Thebes, the Amazon archer Atalanta (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal) of Scythia and his nephew storyteller Iolaus (Reece Ritchie) of Athens. Hercules is said to be the demigod son of Zeus, who completed the legendary Twelve Labors, only to be betrayed by Hera, who drove him insane and caused him to murder his wife Megara (Irina Shayk) and their children during a visit to King Eurystheus (Joseph Fiennes). Hercules is revealed to be nothing more than a mortal albeit one of unusual strength and skill, his legendary stories by Iolaus were done on purpose to frighten enemies and make him more renowned as to attract potential employers, some of the stories that were true were simply exaggerated by his nephew as the huge hydra Hercules' slain in the opening is later revealed to have been merely savages wearing snake helmets. Hercules is frequently haunted by visions of a three headed wolf, which according to legend would be Cerberus.

After finishing a recent mission and saving his nephew, Hercules and his men are celebrating and drinking at a tavern when they approached by Ergenia (Rebecca Ferguson), on behalf of her father, Lord Cotys (John Hurt), who wants Hercules to train the armies of Thrace to defend the kingdom from bloodthirsty warlord Rheseus (Tobias Santelmann). Hercules accepts after he and his men are offered his weight in gold, and the band is welcomed to Thrace by King Cotys and General Sitacles (Peter Mullan), leader of the Thracian army. After training the army, Hercules and his men lead them into battle against local barbarians as a test of their strength. After the barbarians are defeated, Hercules and Sitacles confront Rheseus and his soldiers, believed to be Centaurs, but soon proven to be men on horseback. Rheseus is defeated and taken back to Thrace as a prisoner, where he is tortured and humiliated. Hercules takes pity and stops the townfolk from throwing more objects at him, when Hercules mentions Rheseus' actions of burning down villages, Rheseus tells him it was not him or his army, and tells Hercules that he has been fighting on the wrong side. Later in the hall of the palace, Rheseus has been chained up and left on display, noticing that Ergenia has taken pity to him, Hercules confronts her and finds out Rheseus was telling the truth in that he was merely retaliating against Lord Cotys's aggressive attempts to expand his kingdom, and, although Ergenia doesn't agree with his methods, she abides to them for the sake of her son, Arius, Lord Cotys's successor to the throne, who is being threatened by Cotys.

After receiving their reward, the mercenaries are ready to leave, but Hercules decides to stay behind to stop Cotys, and all but Autolycus choose to follow him. However, they are overpowered and captured by Sitacles and his men. While chained, Hercules is confronted by King Eurystheus, who is in league with Lord Cotys, and reveals that he drugged Hercules the night his family died, viewing him as a threat to his power. Hercules's family was in fact killed by three vicious wolves sent by Eurystheus, resulting in Hercules's constant hallucinations of Cerberus. When Lord Cotys orders Ergenia to be executed for her betrayal, Hercules is encouraged by Amphiaraus to believe in himself just as everyone believes in him, and in a show of inhuman strength, breaks free of his chains, saving Ergenia and slaying the wolves with his bare hands. Hercules releases the prisoners, including Rheseus, and then confronts King Eurystheus, impaling him with his own dagger. He is attacked by Sitacles, who is then stabbed by Iolaus.

Outside, Hercules and his forces battle Lord Cotys and his army. Arius is taken hostage, but then rescued by Autolycus, who has decided to return to help his friends. In the ensuing battle, Tydeus is mortally wounded while protecting Arius, but fights on slaughtering numerous Thracian soldiers. Hercules again uses inhuman strength and pushes a massive statue of Hera from its foundations and uses it to crush Lord Cotys and many of his soldiers. The surviving soldiers bow to Hercules, and Arius takes the throne, with Ergenia at his side, while Hercules and his men depart in search of other adventures.

As the credits roll, an animated retelling of the Twelve Labors shows how Hercules accomplished these feats with the help of his companions.

Transformers age of extinction download

Sixty-five million years ago, during the Cretaceous period, beings known as the "Creators" detonate "Seeds", bombs that cyberform large areas of land and anything it touches, wiping out most life on Earth. In the present, a geologist named Darcy Tirrel discovers two dinosaur corpses covered in a strange metal in the Arctic.

Five years have passed since the Battle of Chicago and humanity has grown fearful of Transformers. The U.S. military has severed joint combat operations with the Autobots. Cemetery Wind, an elite CIA black ops unit headed by a paranoid agent Harold Attinger and team leader James Savoy, has been tasked with hunting down the remaining Decepticons. While the Autobots are officially granted sanctuary, Cemetery Wind has been secretly hunting down the Autobots as well, believing them to be a threat, and has destroyed most of them. With the aid of the Transformer bounty hunter Lockdown, they ambush and brutally kill Ratchet. Their primary target, however, is Optimus Prime, whom Lockdown personally wants alive.

Meanwhile in rural Texas, Cade Yeager, a struggling inventor, and his friend Lucas buy an old truck to strip it for parts in hopes of sending Cade's daughter Tessa to college. Cade soon discovers that the truck is an injured Optimus Prime and repairs him after unexpectedly bringing him back to life. After locating Optimus in Texas, Cemetery Wind and Lockdown travel there and confront Cade, Tessa, and Lucas. Optimus comes out of hiding and attacks the operatives, allowing Cade and his friends to escape before their home is destroyed. They are saved by Tessa's secret boyfriend, Shane Dyson, with whom they escape on Shane's race car while Optimus follows. After a long chase through the city, Lockdown throws a grenade and while Cade, Tessa, and Shane survived, it turns Lucas into a horrific metal corpse, killing him instantly. While hiding in an old gas station, tensions between Cade, his daughter, and Shane rise due to the fact that the two teenagers kept their relationship in secret. Optimus, meanwhile rallies the last remaining Autobots: Bumblebee, Hound, Drift, and Crosshairs. Cade hacks into a drone he took from the attack in Texas, and shows them footage of the ambush and the death of Ratchet and Leadfoot, and learns that Cemetery Wind is working with a robotic corporation called KSI. They decide to infiltrate KSI headquarters in Chicago for information, before an angered Optimus vows to kill Attinger for causing all of this and no longer agrees to protect humans.

Meanwhile, Joshua Joyce, the head of KSI, shows Darcy that he has perfected Transformium, the codeable, molecularly unstable metal that the Transformers are composed of. He has imprisoned Brains (who survived the battle from the third film) to decode dead Transformers' brains and utilize their data for human-created Transformers. Joyce shows Darcy his prized creation, Galvatron, who was created using data from Megatron's brain. Optimus and the Autobots storm the facility, free Brains, and start to destroy the facility. Joyce stops them, and when he explains that humans don't need the Autobots anymore, now that they can create their own Transformer soldiers, and the Autobots leave.

Attinger forces Joyce to launch Galvatron and another man-made Transformer, Stinger (similar to Bumblebee but with different colors), to pursue the Autobots. Galvatron attacks Optimus and the two battle. However, Lockdown suddenly ambushes and wounds Optimus, taking him and Tessa on his ship while Galvatron and Stinger retreat. He locks Optimus in the middle of his trophy room, which also houses the Dinobots. Lockdown explains that the Creators want Optimus back. Before leaving, Lockdown gives Cemetery Wind a Seed, giving Cade, Shane, and the Autobots time to board the ship. Cade and Shane save Tessa and escape with Bumblebee. The other Autobots save Optimus and escape on the detachable section of Lockdown's ship containing the trophy room before Lockdown's ship leaves Earth. Optimus and Brains reveal that Galvatron is Megatron reincarnated, and that he has been manipulating KSI to build an army and steal the Seed in order to wipe out humans and create more Decepticons. Joyce retreats to Beijing with Darcy and his business associate, Su Yueming, to use the production facilities there. Knowing that Attinger and Megatron have been manipulating Joyce all the time, Cade warns Joyce, who decides to go back on his deal with Attinger. As the two argue, Galvatron activates by himself and infects all the KSI prototypes, enabling him to command them to do his bidding, thus recreating the Decepticon army. Joyce flees, taking the Seed to Hong Kong, with an angered Attinger following him.

As the Autobots try to retrieve the Seed, their ship is shot down by the Decepticon forces, leaving the Yeagers, Hound, and Bumblebee to fight the Decepticons outnumbered. Knowing this, Optimus releases and tames the Dinobots. With their help, they destroy nearly all of the Decepticons, including Stinger. Lockdown returns and uses a magnetic weapon in an effort to reclaim Optimus and the Dinobots. However, Optimus destroys it and fights Lockdown. Cade kills Savoy in a fist fight and tries to help, but is held at gunpoint by Attinger, who is angry and disgusted by Cade's choice to side with the Autobots, as he still deems them as a threat to humanity. Optimus saves Cade by blasting Attinger in the chest, killing him, but the distraction allows Lockdown to impale Optimus with his sword, pinning him to a wall. Cade and Bumblebee distract Lockdown while Tessa and Shane use a tow truck to take the sword out of Optimus, who then stabs Lockdown from behind and slices his head open, killing him. Optimus uses Lockdown's last grenade to finish off the remaining Decepticons. Galvatron, the sole survivor, retreats, vowing to meet Optimus another day.

Optimus sets the Dinobots free and they depart to an unknown location. Knowing the Seed must be kept away from Earth (otherwise the Creators will locate them and wipe them out easily), Optimus decides to leave and confront the Creators. He requests the Autobots to protect the Yeagers before flying into space with the Seed, sending a message to the Creators that he is coming for them.

The Wolverine download

In 1945, Logan is held in a Japanese POW camp near Nagasaki. During the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Logan rescues an officer named Yashida and shields him from the blast.

In the present day, Logan lives as a hermit in Yukon, tormented by hallucinations of Jean Grey, whom he was forced to kill a year ago. He is located by Yukio, a mutant with the precognitive ability to foresee people's deaths, on-behalf of Yashida, now the CEO of a technology zaibatsu. Yashida, who is dying of cancer, wants Logan to accompany Yukio to Japan so that he may repay his life debt.

In Tokyo, Logan meets Yashida's son, Shingen, and granddaughter, Mariko. There, Yashida offers to transfer Logan's healing abilities into his own body, thus saving Yashida's life and alleviating Logan of his immortality, which Logan views as a curse. Logan refuses and prepares to leave the following day. That night, Yashida's physician Dr. Green (also known as Viper) introduces something into Logan's body, but Logan dismisses it as a dream.

The next morning, Logan is informed that Yashida has died. At the funeral, Yakuza gangsters attempt to kidnap Mariko, but Logan and Mariko escape together into the urban sprawl of Tokyo. Logan is shot and his wounds do not heal as quickly as they should. After fighting off more Yakuza on a bullet train, Logan and Mariko hide in a local love hotel. Meanwhile, Yashida's bodyguard Harada meets with Dr. Green who, after demonstrating her mutant powers on him, demands he find Logan and Mariko.

Logan and Mariko travel to Yashida's house in Nagasaki, and the two slowly fall for each other. Meanwhile, Yukio has a vision of Logan dying, and goes to warn him. Before Yukio arrives, Mariko is captured by Yakuza. After interrogating one of the kidnappers, Logan and Yukio confront Mariko's fiance, corrupt Minister of Justice Noburo Mori. Mori confesses that he conspired with Shingen to have Mariko killed because Yashida left control of the company to Mariko, and not Shingen.

Mariko is brought before Shingen at Yashida's estate when ninjas led by Harada attack and whisk her away. Logan and Yukio arrive later and, using Yashida's X-ray machine, discover a robotic parasite attached to Logan's heart, suppressing his healing ability. Logan cuts himself open and extracts the device. During the operation, Shingen attacks but Yukio holds Shingen off long enough for Logan to recover and kill Shingen.

Logan follows Mariko's trail to the village of Yashida's birth, where he is captured by Harada's ninjas. Logan is placed in a machine by Dr. Green, who reveals her plans to extract his healing factor and introduces him to the Silver Samurai, an electromechanical suit of Japanese armour with energized swords made of adamantium. Mariko escapes from Harada, who believes he is acting in Mariko's interests, and manages to free Logan from the machine. Harada sees the error of his ways and is killed by the Silver Samurai while helping Logan escape.

Meanwhile, Yukio arrives and kills Dr. Green as Logan fights the Silver Samurai. The Silver Samurai severs Logan's adamantium claws and begins to extract Logan's healing abilities, revealing himself to be Yashida, who had faked his death. Yashida starts to regain his youth, but Mariko intervenes and stabs Yashida with Logan's severed claws while Logan regenerates his bone claws and kills Yashida. Logan collapses and has one final hallucination of Jean, in which he decides to finally let go of her.

Mariko becomes CEO of Yashida Industries and bids farewell to Logan as he prepares to leave Japan. Yukio vows to stay by Logan's side as his bodyguard, and they depart to places unknown.

In a mid-credits scene, Logan returns to the United States two years later and is approached at the airport by Magneto, who warns him of a grave new threat to the mutant race, and Professor X, who was previously thought to be dead.

Eventually, with the help of Lino and Tremaine, Damien realizes that his father was killed by his fellow officers and that the mayor was behind the plot. Damien, Lino and Tremaine confront the mayor and manage to prove his true intentions and have him removed from office. Brick Mansions is welcomed back into the city, with Damien and Lino continuing their friendship.

Edge of Tomorrow (also marketed with the tagline Live Die Repeat[nb 1]) is a 2014 American science fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Doug Liman directed the film based on a screenplay adapted from the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The film takes place in the near future, where an alien race has invaded the Earth and defeated the world's military units. It follows Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer inexperienced in combat, who is deployed into a combat mission against the aliens. Though Cage is killed in minutes, he finds himself starting over in a time loop, repeating the same mission and being killed. With every repeated day his fighting skills and knowledge of the aliens improve, and he teams up with Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt) to defeat them.

The production company 3 Arts Productions bought rights to All You Need Is Kill in late 2009, and it sold a spec script to the American studio Warner Bros. Pictures for production. The studio co-produced the film with the Australian production company Village Roadshow. Filming began in late 2012 and took place mainly at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden outside London. Trafalgar Square in London was also a filming location for some scenes. Nine companies handled the visual effects.

The film was released in theaters in 28 territories, including the United Kingdom, Brazil, Germany, Spain, India, and Indonesia, on the weekend of May 30, 2014. On the weekend of June 6, 2014, it was released in 36 additional territories, including North America (United States and Canada), Australia, China, and Russia. The film grossed over $369.2 million in theaters worldwide and received largely positive reviews from critics.

Mali confirms two new Ebola cases

 

United Nations, November 25:

Mali has confirmed two new cases of Ebola, bringing to total number of cases in the West African nation to eight, days ahead of the opening of a new UN Ebola response office.

The UN office was oening to support the country's efforts to fight and contain the virus, Xinhua quoted a UN spokesman as saying here Tuesday.

"Today, Mali's Ministry of Health has confirmed two new cases of Ebola in the country, bringing the total of cases in Mali to eight, with all six previously identified patients having died," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said here at a daily news briefing.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) says that the identification of patient contacts for daily monitoring has reportedly reached 99 percent, and based on experiences in Senegal and Nigeria, this achievement could augur well for rapid containment of the current outbreak in Mali," Dujarric said.

Mali, previously free from the virus, is the latest country to register Ebola cases.

Five confirmed Ebola deaths can be traced back to a 70-year-old imam who was brought to the country from Guinea, where the epidemic first began.

ADB: Japan likely to return to growth in 4Q

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The president of the Asian Development Bank said Wednesday that Japan's economy is expected to return to growth in the fourth quarter of this year and its recession will have little impact on Southeast Asian economies.

Japan earlier this month said its economy, which is the world's third biggest after the U.S. and China, slipped into recession in the third quarter. It contracted an annualized 1.6 percent in the July-September period as consumer and corporate spending failed to gain momentum after a sales tax increase in April.

"It's not very encouraging but if we examine the structures of GDP very carefully we cannot be too pessimistic," Takehiko Nakao told reporters.

"I don't think there will be a very big impact from the Japanese economy" on growth in Southeast Asia, where Japan is a big investor, he said.

Individuals and companies ramped up spending before the April 1 increase in Japan's sales tax and the economy is still undergoing an adjustment from that, Nakao said. The contraction in the third quarter reflected businesses letting inventories dwindle rather than replenishing stocks of goods, he said.

Nakao also said the ADB was ready to cooperate with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank led by China, touted by some as a possible rival of the Manila-based development lender. Cooperation, which could be discussed after the AIIB secretariat is established, could come in the form of joint financing, he said.

MI5 and MI6 made mistakes, but only internet company could have prevented Rigby's murder, claims report

The parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee's report into Lee Rigby's murder was conveniently sandwiched between the home secretary's keynote speech on Monday, when she described an unprecedented terror threat facing the UK, and the publication of the government's latest counter terrorism bill planned for Wednesday.

Just how convenient was made quite clear by the way the committee pointed the finger at internet companies, who are regarded by GCHQ, MI5, Theresa May and her Home Office officials, as enemies (along with civil liberty groups) in the fight against terrorism.

Had MI5 been able to read an online exchange between Michael Adebowale, one of Rigby's killers, and an "extremist overseas", there was a "significant possibility that MI5 would have been able to prevent the attack", claimed Sir Malcolm Rifkind, the committee's chair and former Conservative cabinet minister.

(The report itself prefaces the claim by saying "it is difficult to speculate on the outcome" had the internet exchange been sent to the spooks.)

The ISC does not stop there. In a press notice reflecting the report, Rifkind went so far as to say that "however unintentionally, [internet companies] are providing a safe haven for terrorists". Internet companies, he added, "appear to accept no responsibility for the services they provide".

Rifkind and his committee claim that an unnamed internet company alone can be blamed for failing to prevent Rigby's murder. The companies have been a chief target of MI5 and GCHQ, strongly backed by Theresa May and senior Home Office officials who want the companies to police the internet and websites for them.

The message was rammed home by GCHQ's new director, Robert Hannigan, in a column in the Financial Times early this month when he described web giants such as Twitter, Facebook, and WhatsApp as "command-and-control networks... for terrorists and criminals".

The companies are under extreme pressure from GCHQ , MI5, and senior ministers, to provide their data with the least possible scrutiny, control, and oversight.

This is despite evidence from a separate parliamentary committee which has strongly criticised the "snooper's charter" - and contradicted claims by the ISC on Tuesday - that most US internet companies had "extremely cooperative professional relationships" with UK security and intelligence agencies.

Edward's Snowden's disclosures have made clear GCHQ already has direct access to internet communications.

Tuesday's ISC report says the eight months it took for MI5 to start investigating Adebowale was "unacceptable" and that neither MI5 nor MI6 accorded Michael Adebolajo, Rigby's other killer, "sufficient priority" when he returned the UK from Kenya.

MI6 was involved in disrupting Adebolajo's links in Kenya with terrorist groups. 5 things government whistleblowers say you must know

LONDON, UK — No matter how much they dislike it, governments need calling out.

That’s what a group of whistleblowers who risked their careers, reputations and personal freedom to uphold said Friday. Now serving on the advisory board of ExposeFacts.org, a project of the Institute for Public Accuracy in Washington, they said the nature of government secrecy ensures that more people will have to take similar risks in the future — and that the consequences could be even greater.

“If whistleblowers are suppressed, which is the clear intention of the US and British governments, all that’s left is a flow of official information… which adds up to lies and war,” said ExposeFacts coordinator Norman Soloman.

The government doesn’t need to spy on people all the time to keep them in line. It just needs them to know that it can.

The US National Security Agency and British equivalent, GCHQ, aren’t using all the information they’re gathering today, said J. Kirk Wiebe, a former NSA employee who went public after his 2001 retirement with information about the agency’s mass collection of individuals’ data. It’s being stored in a server to be used as evidence of crimes committed down the road.

Those who condone spying because they personally have nothing to hide should remember that it’s not clear what future governments will consider illegal, he said.
“The next time you hear someone saying ‘I’m not worried, I’m not doing anything wrong’ — rubbish,” Wiebe said. “You don’t get to choose what’s wrong.”

Surveillance doesn’t guarantee security.

“We are told that governmental secrecy is protecting us, when the truth is the opposite,” said Coleen Rowley, a former FBI special agent who exposed the agency’s intelligence failures before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.A refusal to share intelligence within agencies, across agencies and with the public contributed to the attacks, the 9/11 Commission found.

Matthew Hoh, who resigned from the US State Department in 2009 to protest American policy in Afghanistan, offered another example. In the wake of disclosures by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the Obama administration argued that the NSA’s surveillance tactics thwarted 54 terror attacks. After pressure from journalists and US Sen. Patrick Leahy, the NSA confirmed just four cases, none of which were a direct result of the spying program.

“The government can scare and intimidate, but there has been no evidence that these tactics are helping,” Hoh said. “This is actually causing us to be much less secure.”In the US, whistleblowers are worse than foreign spies.

The Obama administration has prosecuted more people under the Espionage Act than all other administrations combined, Solomon wrote in The Nation last month. It’s gone after journalists and government employees suspected of leaking information. It also created the National Insider Threat Policy, requiring government employees to report coworkers who may be passing on classified information.

“In effect, the people of the US are to be viewed as the enemy from whom basic information about government actions should be withheld,” Solomon said.“There’s nothing a government hates worse than embarrassment,” Wiebe added. “It’s almost worse than leaking a top secret.”

Woodward and Bernstein’s Watergate scoop probably couldn’t happen today.

"Both Chelsea and Edward are on the right side of history," Hoh said, "and they will be vindicated."

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Let’s say you work for a government agency. You’re in charge of buying computers for the office, and you’re asked to call private companies for bids. One of the interested companies’ representatives gives you a brand new laptop. “It’s just for you,” he says. “Please accept it as gratitude for helping me win the tender,” he adds.
What do you do?

It was a brand new “Kasio” laptop, and the guy seemed nice, so we just took it. A seemingly non-judgmental robot showed up, and asked whether we wished to report what had happened. We said no. The robot was not happy. “You have to maintain your integrity,” it said.
Because, see, what just happened is not fine. The nice guy just bribed us.
This is one of the things you learn when using Indonesia’s anti-corruption agency’s new app.
Why an app?
Because it turns out that many in Indonesia are not aware that giving or receiving gifts in such situations is an offense, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) says. Through the app, the KPK, which also launched its own TV channel over the summer, hopes to raise awareness on low-level and common graft.
“Corruption is widespread when it comes to winning public contracts or obtaining business licenses,” explains Wahyudi, who uses one name and is a program coordinator for Transparency International in Jakarta. It’s almost impossible to start a business without having to bribe someone, and people are often expected to pay public servants for services that should be free.
The app features a theme park and includes animated quizzes, graphs and explanations to teach the general public and officials what’s okay and what’s not in terms of receiving and giving presents, explains KPK spokesperson Johan Budi. It also includes games, such as “catch the corruptor,” and one in which you have to avoid or catch gifts according to whether you think they’re bribes.
Just a tip: bars of gold and trips to the Leaning Tower of Pisa are not okay.
The app was launched in early October.
That seems to be a shame for the governor of Riau, a province in Sumatra. Had the app been released earlier, Annas Maamun would have maybe deduced that receiving 2 billion Indonesian rupees ($166,000) from a palm oil businessman in exchange for a permit to exploit forest area was an offense.
“I’m sorry, I’m sick,” said the 74-year-old while breaking down in tears at the KPK agency on Wednesday.

The KPK, which focuses on high-level corruption, is hugely popular in the country, and surprisingly efficient. Since the agency was founded in 2002, it has arrested nearly 400 people.
Corruption cases make headlines every month or so. Recent cases include the energy minister being named a suspect in September, the sport minister jailed for four years in July, and the religious affairs minister stepping down in July after being accused of misusing Haj pilgrimage funds.
The country’s recently inaugurated president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who has a reputation as a “clean” politician, has promised a series of measures to tackle corruption. After the energy minister was named a suspect, he said he would set up an “anti-mafia” task force to deal with corruption in the sale of oil and gas. Jokowi also moved tax collections online as a governor of Jakarta, and has announced he will do the same at the national level.
The KPK's Johan Budi admits some officials probably don’t need an app to tell them they’re corrupt. But he says that while corruption is indeed widespread in Indonesia, the country's efforts to fight graft could make it “an example for others.”
“In Indonesia today no one is above the law, even at the highest levels of power,” he says.

Horse owners say their beloved equines are suffering after eating tainted feed

Horses at a Davie boarding farm and riding school, worth thousands of dollars, are dying one by one. The apparent culprit: Tainted feed. The horse owners allege the food they bought from a Lakeland company contains an antibiotic meant for cattle — but toxic to horses. The company is investigating, and has ceased production and sale of the feed. Debra Buis, a private boarder who owns two of the horses at Masterpiece Equestrian Center, said three equines at the farm developed sudden paralysis and collapsed in October. All three died within a week.
Days later, testing of the feed, conducted at the horse owners' request, came back positive for monensin, a powerful medication used in poultry and cattle feeds. Monensin is too strong for horses.
Buis said 19 remaining horses at the stable are sick, and many are expected to die.
"We'll have to make a decision to euthanize at some point," she said, because of the discomfort of the horses, some of whom are bleeding from the nose.
The feed supplier is Lakeland Animal Nutrition Inc. The nearly 100-year-old feed company, purchased by Alltech of Kentucky in 2012 but separately managed, said Friday in an emailed statement that the feed distributed throughout Florida was recalled after the deaths in October.
No other deaths have been reported, according to the statement by Jonathan Lang, general manager of Lakeland Animal Nutrition.
Lang also said the company is halting production and sale of equine feeds completely. "This business decision … was the result of months of consideration," he said.
"We are very saddened by the sicknesses and deaths of the horses at Masterpiece Equestrian," he wrote. "A full investigation is under way as we seek to understand any possible quality or procedural causes of monensin contamination. Our thoughts are with the Masterpiece Equestrian family, and, although their horses could never be replaced, we are committed to doing all we can to bring wholeness to them in their suffering."
Buis said her family poured considerable finances into her teenage daughter's ailing Dutch Warmblood horse, Ultimatum, born and bred in Holland. Her daughter, who studies at an online school so she can concentrate on riding, has been training to become an Olympic hopeful. Now she may lose her treasured mount.
The illness is devastating to watch, said the farm's attorney, Andrew Yaffa, who has offices in Coral Gables and Boca Raton. "It's like watching a family member deteriorate before your eyes," he said.
The illness has closed down the stable's riding business, because the farm can't risk putting children on sick horses that could collapse. Show horses boarded there can be worth $35,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars, the lawyer said.

Boy, 12, shot by Cleveland police dies

A 12-year-old boy who was shot by police after he brandished a pellet gun at a Cleveland recreation center died on Sunday from his injuries, officials said,The boy was identified as Tamir E. Rice, 12, of Cleveland by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner. Rice was shot in the abdomen by a city officer at a playground on the city's west side on Saturday, said Timothy Kucharski, an attorney for the boy's family. According to the recording of a 911 call, a witness at the Cudell Recreation Center park told the police dispatcher that he saw somebody with a pistol and he was pointing it at people.
The caller told the dispatcher that the gun was "probably fake." But he said that it was scaring people.
Officers responded and advised the boy to raise his hands, according to a police statement.
"The suspect did not comply with the officers' orders and reached to his waistband for the gun. Shots were fired and the suspect was struck in the torso," the statement said.
After a preliminary investigation, authorities said the gun Rice had was an airsoft-type replica gun resembling a semi-automatic pistol.
Airsoft weapons are realistic-looking guns used in play combat, and they usually shoot plastic pellets. Most are made with bright orange tips so that they aren't confused with real guns. Police said the orange safety indicator was removed from the replica gun Rice was holding.
The boy was taken to MetroHealth Hospital where he underwent surgery Saturday and remained in critical condition until his death early Sunday, Kucharski said. The death was confirmed by hospital spokesman Jonah Rosenblum.
The two officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave. One of them was treated at Fairview Hospital for an ankle injury.
The shooting followed another incident that shook the city. On Friday, Cleveland police said four people, including a 41-year-old pregnant woman, were shot and killed at a home on the city's east side. A 9-year-old girl was shot in the chest and was treated and released from a local hospital.

Suicide bomber kills 45 at volleyball match in Afghanistan

GARDEZ, Afghanistan — A suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest in a crowd of spectators at a volleyball match in Afghanistan on Sunday, killing 45 people, a provincial official said, as foreign troops withdraw from the country after more than a decade of fighting.
Mukhles Afghan, spokesman for the governor of Paktika province, said at least 50 more were wounded in the attack in Yahya Khel district, where residents had gathered to watch a tournament final.
He said most of the casualties were civilians.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack. The spokesman said around 50 more people were wounded.
Casualties were high because the crowd was so dense, since people had come from nearby districts to cheer on their team. No other details were immediately available because of the remoteness of the location.
The Taliban and other jihadist militants have unleashed waves of suicide attacks in Afghanistan this year as foreign forces pull out after 13 years of war.
About 12,000 international troops will remain in Afghanistan next year to train and support Afghanistan's security forces.
Paktika was the site of one of this year's deadliest attacks in July, when 89 people were killed by a bomb in a crowded market.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach condemned the "cowardly" attack.
"It is an attack on sport itself and on the positive values it can bring to help build strong communities and foster peace and reconciliation around the world," he said in a statement.
The Taliban banned public sports events as un-Islamic during their five-year rule before the 2001 US-led intervention that toppled them from power after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on US cities.
Paktika province has an active Afghan Taliban insurgent presence and lies along the porous border with Pakistan's North Waziristan region, used as a base by both the Haqqani militant network and the Pakistani branch of the Taliban.
The Pakistani army for months has been waging an offensive against militants in North Waziristan, driving refugees and militant fighters across the border into Afghanistan.
This year has been one of the bloodiest for Afghan civilians, according to the United Nations, which recorded nearly 5,000 deaths and injuries of civilians in the first half of the year.
